The Belted Galloway "Belties" are an ancient breed of Galloway cattle that are one of the "best" for producing tender, high quality, flavorful beef that is simply better than the rest by being able to convert a wide range of forages on grass alone.
A Little History: They were brought to the mountainous and wooded Southwestern region of Scotland by the Vikings hordes around 1530. The Vikings named that region Gaul, after their king, which later was changed to Galloway. The Vikings abandoned the Belties to pursue other conquest so, the Belties needed to fend for themselves and were quite resourceful. They adjusted to grazing on the rough countryside, exposed to the bitterly cold sea winds. Over time they developed a completely unique and heavy double coat. The undercoat is short and soft and very dense and the overcoat is long ,wavy, and shaggy which appears in the winter. This double coat provided the additional insulation the animal required to deal with the elements of their environment and to this day it is unneccessary for Belties to have an extra layer of fat underneath their hide like many other breeds. In 2013 there was a devastating snowstorm out west that killed thousands of cattle. The good news not one Beltie died. They are rugged and incrediably efficient at converting forges to delicious beef and are considered one of nature's richest gifts to us.
